The Kabyle (Kabyle leqbayel) are a Berber people living in Kabylie , a mountainousregion of northeastern Algeria , although their name, which originally just means"tribes" (from Arabic), is occasionally used to refer to other Berber groups. Since the Berber Spring in 1980 , Algerian Kabyle have been at the forefront of agitation for the official recognition of the Berber language alongside Arabic .

Kabyle is also the Afro-Asiatic language (Kabyletaqbaylit, pronounced thaqvayleeth) spoken by the Kabyle people. There are over 3,000,000 speakers worldwide, themajority in Algeria, where there are 2,500,000 speakers.
