  • I-495 is now an unsigned designation for the short route connecting I-95 with I-295 north of Portland, Maine . In January2004, the routes of I-495, I-95, and I-295 were changed. Previously, I-295 was an 11.02 mile (17.73km) long route throughdowntown Portland. I-95 was re-routed onto what was I-495 between the junction north of Portland and Gardiner while I-295 wasextended to include what had been I-95.

New York

Interstate 495, also known as the Long Island Expressway (LIE), runs 66.38 miles from New York City, New York the length of Long Island , Nassau and Suffolk counties, ending just before the "fish-tail"(where the island splits into northern and southern forks) at Riverhead, New York .

Smaller highways continue on from the end of the LIE to Greenport on the North Fork and past the Hamptons to Montauk on the South Fork. Cynics havesuggested that the acronym is appropriate, in that the term "expressway" is a lie.
